For all those who sprinted to get the Tecno Camon X immediately following its release, a whirlwind of thoughts must be circulating in your minds right now. Are there upgrades in storage space? Does it come with a higher resolution display and aspect ratio? These questions and more are answered by the phone that was launched in 2018 alongside the Tecno Camon X. Yes! I am referring to none other than the Tecno Camon X Pro.
This phone made its debut in stores simultaneously with the Tecno Camon X, which is its lower variant. However, it deserves to be called the “deal-breaker” as it offers even more enhancements compared to the Camon X.
The Camon X Pro, a sequel to the Camon CX, is available in Bordeaux Red and Midnight Black. It features Face ID, a 1080 x 2160 pixel display, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal memory (ROM), and a host of other features. This is what I consider Tecno’s finest smartphone on the market.
In this review, I will highlight 10 new features of the Tecno Camon X Pro, as well as the setbacks or features we dislike.
Tecno Camon X Pro Display
- The Camon X Pro boasts a 6.0 inch IPS screen with Gorilla Glass 4, guaranteeing a display that can withstand tough conditions. Moreover, it offers an aspect ratio of 18.9 and a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels, delivering high-definition graphics. This is a significant upgrade for gamers and movie lovers.
- With a brightness level of up to 500nit, the Camon X Pro ensures excellent visibility even in sunlight or darkness. This means you can interact with your phone screen anytime, anywhere.
Tecno Camon X Pro Camera
- The phone features a stunning 24-megapixel front camera with an f/20 aperture and dual-LED, equipped with HDR capabilities and AI beauty algorithms to enhance your pictures.
- It is also equipped with a 16-megapixel rear camera with an f/20 aperture and a focus faster than its predecessors. Additionally, the quad-LED flash enables the camera to capture quality photos in both good and poor lighting conditions.
Note: However, it is important to mention that the Camon X Pro does not have a great camera, especially for low-light situations. The front camera is not as impressive as the one on the Camon CX. Personally, I would not have upgraded if the camera was a priority for me. With the massive 24 MP front camera, I had expected something exceptional, but unfortunately, the performance fell short, especially when taking pictures at night. Please consider this honest assessment of the camera when making your decision.
Tecno Camon X Pro Hardware
- The Camon X Pro is equipped with MediaTek’s System on a Chip, the Helio P23 octa-core processor, which is more powerful than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430. It features eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores based on 64-bit architecture, along with an integrated Mali-G71 MP3 graphics processor operating at 770MHz.
- The phone offers more speed and storage space for those who require it. With 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory (ROM), as well as an SD card slot, the Camon X Pro provides ample expandable storage space.
- The fingerprint sensor at the back of the phone is faster than that of the Phantom 8, designed to allow for better finger placement and more precise functionality.
Tecno Camon X Pro Software
- The Camon X Pro comes with the new HiOS V3.3 layered Android Oreo 8.1, keeping it up to date with other smartphones running on the Android OS. This software is also expected to be upgradable to the next OS version when released.
- With Face ID, the Camon X Pro takes security to the next level. It captures an in-depth map of your face and unlocks the phone faster than the Iris scanner, simply by looking into the front camera of the Camon X Pro.
Tecno Camon X Pro Battery
- The phone is equipped with a 3750 mAh battery that provides 4 to 5 hours of screen-on time, ensuring your phone remains active throughout the day.
While there are many noteworthy features to look forward to in the Camon X Pro, there are also a few aspects that may not be well-received:
- Due to the midrange Adreno GPUs in Qualcomm chips, some gameplay may experience occasional hiccups caused by the graphics chip.
- There are some redundant apps in the HiOS that could have been removed, as they serve no purpose other than occupying storage space. For example, an app for something that can easily be accessed in the Settings Menu seems unnecessary.
- Without Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Professional Mode, the camera may not be as versatile as expected.
Our Verdict
The Tecno Camon X Pro, Tecno’s finest Camon model to date, offers consistent performance, decent battery life, and an impressive camera power, a characteristic feature of the Camon series. This is a phone that you will not feel the need to replace anytime soon, unless Tecno releases another impressive device. It is not a disappointment, but rather a testament to the maturity of Chinese smartphone manufacturers.
