When I was a small child, I was inexplicably drawn to the sea. As an adult, this fascination continues in the form of sea fishing. I find it quite exciting to be standing on a beach or rocky promontory, looking out over the ocean, just knowing the are fish out there, waiting to be caught. Knowledge is never enough, though. Although I do fish from land, more often venture out in my small boat to try the waters. For rugged sea angling excursions, you need to have the best sea fishing tackle you can afford. Here’s some information about one of my favourite sea fishing reels, the Penn 320LD multiplier lever drag boat reel.
About the Penn 320LD Multiplier Lever Drag Boat Reel
First, I want to stress the importance of light weight in a boat reel. An angler needs to be able to move about the boat quickly, so his reel needs to weigh as little as possible. At just 21 ounces, this reel fits the bill quite nicely. A lightweight reel leaves me free to respond quickly and change position easily as the fight progresses. Also, using a lightweight reel helps to keep me from getting tired on those extra-long angling excursions. When I was shopping for a boat reel, I chose a Penn model, largely because of the company’s reputation for producing reels that tolerate unrelenting punishment yet deliver superior performance.
Features of the Penn 320LD Multiplier Lever Drag Boat Reel
I’m partial to lever drag reels and this Penn doesn’t disappoint. It has an extremely powerful yet superbly smooth drag system. The 320LD contains 4 stainless steel aircraft quality ball bearings as well as a stainless steel pinion gear. The main gear is manganese-bronze for maximum corrosion resistance. Penn has done a good job addressing the weight issue by using a high-tech, lightweight graphite frame that’s as functional as it is good-looking. The spool is made from aluminium that’s been anodised. Anodisation, by the way, is a way to make aluminium more durable and stronger. Without getting too technical, I can say that in the anodisation process, aluminium is subjected to a chemical process that creates a strong, fortified surface coating. Finally, the 320LD has a stainless steel level wind. Expect to pay about £199.99 (£134.99 on special offer) for this reel.
More About the Penn 320LD
The 320LD reel will hold an ample 380 yards of 15 pound test line. The gear ratio is 4.3:1. I’ve found this reel to be invaluable for fishing in challenging locales, such as over wrecks and around rough ground. With the updated lever drag feature replacing the old star system, this reel is considerably updated. I do appreciate how easy it is now to shift the drag tension with just the flick of a switch. Much improved!
If you’re looking for a serious piece of sea fishing tackle, the Penn 320LD multiplier lever drag boat reel is one you should add to your collection.
